6 Tips to Make Choosing a Family Physician Painless

primary care physicians

As we age, we are bound to have unique medical needs. Meeting these needs is the challenge of the physicians you choose, but the process begins long before you walk into the front office. You need to carefully consider the physician you are choosing and this will involve planning, asking the right questions, and getting as in depth a look into the physician as possible. In a world filled with obligations, visits of friends and family, social engagements and work, how can you make sure you get the right physician for your needs? Here are some tips to get you started.

Ask Around

We often trust those we know when it comes to finding what we need. This holds true for everything from the movies we watch to the cars we buy. Following this principle can be equally helpful when it is time to choose a primary care physician. Primary care physicians come in many shapes and sizes, and you want to make sure you begin your search in the right place. Here’s how to do this while using those whose opinions you respect.

You will want to consider those who have similar situations as yours first. Perhaps they are of about the same age, or maybe they live near you. Those who are going to be the most helpful are going to be people who have similar medical conditions as you do. Or perhaps you don’t have any current medical issues. Then you may want to consider the opinion of a friend with whom you share a similar medical history. They are going to know how it felt to be treated by X physician and may be able to steer you in the right direction. Furthermore, they may have an understanding about the issues that tend to pop up even after the primary condition has been dealt with. These insights are just as helpful because it’s often the auxiliary things that occur after a condition has been handled that impact our lives the most. All of this information can be requested from good friends of family members who have walked in your shoes.

Location, Location, Location

Primary care physicians that are closer to you are going to be of more value than those that are farther away. Even if you hear great things about more remote primary care physicians, having a family doctor closer to you is going to pay several benefits. When somebody is closer to where you live, travel to and from appointments is going to be much easier and faster. Further, if you encounter obstacles on the way to their office, they won’t impact your commute as drastically as they would if the office were farther away. For instance, if there is snow fall, the weather will only impact the road for as long as you have to travel it. This cuts the disruption down significantly. Or if there are traffic issues, a closer commute to your PCP is going to mitigate the effects of the traffic disturbance. A family doctor is a great asset. However, even family physicians that are excellent at their craft are only going to be useful if they are readily accessible. Hence, this tip may end up carrying even more weight than the first one.

Make Sure You Are Covered

Some really good primary care physicians are not set up to accept Medicare patients. A Medicare doctor is going to be a necessity if you use this program. Medicare doctors of course pay for themselves many times over due to the fact that insurance can foot the bill. Even if the location of a Medicare doctor ends up making the travel to the office longer, it will still be worth it in the long run. The same goes for a doctor that you find without any strong recommendations. Your plan’s network is likely fairly vast and you should be able to find someone that fits in well. If you can’t, feel free to call your insurance company for assistance. They can help you navigate the website as well.

Around 31 million injuries happen every year that require medical attention occur every year in the United States. But you can be prepared with the right primary care physicians by your side.
